Student arrested; high school locked down

OKLAHOMA CITY - U.S. Grant High school was on lock down Tuesday after a student brought a gun on campus Monday, officials said.

When students and teachers arrived at the southside Oklahoma City school, they weren't allowed outside of the building as a security precaution. Hallway access was also restricted.

Police said a 14-year-old freshman brought a gun to school on Monday. Police have questioned and arrested the student, whose name will not be released since they are a minor.

The freshman faces a felony charge for possession of a firearm on school property and possible suspension for a year.

According to police, the student had a 40 caliber glock pistol.

"What if he would've harmed somebody, what if that person could've been me," student Sandra Garcia said.

The school has metal detectors at the main entrances, so police are trying to figure out how the student brought a gun inside.

"It's a scary thought. I don't understand how he got through the school without being noticed and nobody knew about it," parent Mary Clark said.

According to a police report, the staff at the school learned the 14-year-old had a gun. When a police officer confronted the teen, the student put a hand over his waistband. There was a struggle, and the officer got the gun.

The report said the student told the officer the gun wasn't theirs, it was a friend's.

Parents and students are shocked.

"It's pretty scary to think that my kids are thinking they're safe at school and they're really not," Clark said.

Oklahoma City school Superintendent Karl Springer said school officials are reviewing their security policies and will increase police presence at the southside campus.

"We are not going to allow this kind of behavior," Springer said.

Over the past 10 years, a real gun has never been removed from a student within Oklahoma City public schools.
