Deputies say an argument broke out just after midnight at a home near I-244 and West 41st Street.
Investigators say Charles told them his son Terry was being "irresponsible" with a gun by "waving it around and playing." The gun was put away, but investigators say that sparked more fighting between Terry and another man at the scene.
Charles told deputies he got in between the two to stop the fighting, but his son punched him, so he grabbed a gun and tried to pistol whip him.
That's when deputies say the gun went off, hitting the other man. Deputies found the father's truck at a nearby QuikTrip. They say he took the victim to the hospital.
"It's our understanding that there was a fight, a physical fight that occurred between Terry and our victim and the father tried to step in and intervene the situation. That’s when the gun went off," said Deputy Justin Green.
News On 6 was told the victim is out of surgery but deputies say they do not know how he's doing.
