A Broken Arrow family is safe after firefighters say lightning caused their house to catch fire.
Broken Arrow Fire crews responded to the call around 4:30 Saturday morning and say there were flames and black smoke coming out of the roof when they arrived at the house near 101st Street and 177th East Avenue.
Crews say the fire started somewhere in the attic and they were able to get it put out before it spread to the rest of the house. They say since the fire was in the attic they had to use a lot of water which damaged a lot of the house.
They did say the rain helped keep the fire contained.
"It doesn't necessarily help inside the house, it does help in flying embers going and starting fires elsewhere. A concern was that we had a lot of fire in the roof in the South end putting heat on the house next door," said Broken Arrow Fire Department Battalion Chief Scott Emerick.
Firefighters say they believe lightning may have struck the home but are still working to rule out other causes.
