Investigators say a Mayes County Deputy caused a crash that left him and another man with serious injuries. The deputy was pinned in his overturned patrol unit - and the other driver thrown from his pickup truck.
Mayes County Deputy Dustin Evans underwent surgery Monday but is expected to return to duty after a hospital stay, according to Sheriff’s Office Major Rod Howell.
The crash took place at 10:20 p.m. Saturday on Highway 20 at Carbide Road. The intersection is often busy.
It was there that the deputy was southbound on Carbide and apparently missed the stop sign at Highway 20.
"When he failed to yield to a westbound vehicle that was headed into Pryor," said Assistant Chief James Willard, Pryor Police.
The crash flipped Evans' Chevy Tahoe patrol unit and scattered parts across the highway. We found bullets, rifle cartridges and a shotgun shell in the grass.
Deputy Dustin Evans was pinned in the wreckage.
"All of our heart and prayers go out to him and his family, and the other people involved too. We want people to know that," said Major Rod Howell, Mayes County Sheriff's Office.
Pryor Police say the deputy hit a Dodge pickup, and the driver was thrown out. He's still in the hospital. A passenger was treated and released.
Major Howell said Evans was responding to a call near Chouteau, and police say it didn't appear his emergency lights and siren were on. Regardless, police say the deputy appears to have caused the accident that is still under investigation.
"Obviously it's officer discretion on a violation, but the accident is being worked just like anybody else would be," said Assistant Pryor Police Chief James Willard.
The other people involved are Robert and Taylor Reed of Vinita.
He was the driver of the pickup that was hit, and he's still in the hospital. She was treated and released.
The deputy is expected to make a full recovery.
