One Man Dead After Muskogee Officer-Involved Shooting

Muskogee Police say an officer shot and killed a man at a restaurant Monday afternoon.

The shooting happened around 2:00 p.m. at the I Don’t Care Bar and Grill on West Shawnee Street.

Muskogee Police say officers went to that location to arrest a man, identified as Andrew Kana, who had four warrants from two states, including domestic assault by strangulation and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Because there were other people inside, they decided only one officer would go in to make the arrest.

Police say the officer got one cuff on Kana, but he then refused commands for his other arm and pulled out a small handgun. The officer fired, hitting Kana in the chest and killing him, police say.

"Our officers are human beings. Our officers are not robots. We sense, we feel just like everybody else does. The simple fact is that no officer wants to deal with this type of situation; no officer wants to be in this situation," said Officer Lincoln Anderson.

Police say neither the officer nor any other person at the restaurant was hurt.

"The investigators will interview all the employees, they'll interview the witnesses, the patrons, and determine exactly what led up to the shooting itself," said Anderson.  "From there, the information will be submitted to the D.A."

The Muskogee Police Department says each of the three officers present at the time of the shooting will be placed on administrative leave and video from their body cameras will be released after investigators interview the officers.
