Broken Arrow Students Build Garden To Save Monarch Butterflies

Broken Arrow High School students helped kick-off a community-wide effort Thursday to save Monarch butterflies.

Along with some younger students, they are planting milkweed and other flowering plants in gardens at Broken Arrow High, that will attract the butterflies.

The Monarch population has dropped over the past 15-years, in large part because there aren't as many milkweed plants, which is the only food source for Monarch caterpillars.

"It's amazing the to think something as simple as planting milkweed could actually help save a species," said Donna Gradel.  

Over the next year, the Broken Arrow Parks Department will plant gardens at Battle Creek Golf Course, Veterans Park, the Ray Harral Nature Park, and BA's City Hall.
