After a series of deals and delays during the last two decades, the American Indian Cultural Center and Museum appears to be back on track.

The museum was conceived as a world-class showcase for Oklahoma's American Indian heritage. Over the years, however, cost overruns led to political disagreements, and together they halted work on the complex at the intersection of interstates 35 and 40 near downtown Oklahoma City.

The dream that launched the 173,000-square-foot project is being revived in an agreement among the state and a partnership between the city of Oklahoma City and the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma.

Native American Cultural and Educational Authority executive director Blake Wade says the museum and cultural center will offer a new destination for travelers in the southwest.
