A grass fire near the Highway 99 and Highway 33 intersection near Drumright in Payne County prompted evacuations Friday afternoon.
Dozens of firefighters, full-time and volunteer, have been working to put the fire out since 2:00 p.m. The Forestry Department even deployed helicopters to help battle the blaze.
The Drumright fire chief said the fire is 65 percent contained and expects within the next three hours or so it will be out.
At one point, officials said the fire was two miles long. They said it jumped Ninth Street and threatened to shut down Highway 33.
In all, OHP said about 23 homes in the area and the Oak Grove School district were evacuated.
The wind is expected to die down but firefighters plan to stay out much of the night to keep an eye on hot spots.
