A local group wants to put backpacks in every police car in Tulsa.

Joy In The Cause – a non-profit focused on providing care, compassion and joy - is filling the backpacks with books, t-shirts, coloring books and hand-made Mavis Pearl dogs modeled after the group's therapy dog and mascot, Mavis Pearl, the bulldog.

They say kids are often having their worst day when they meet a police officer.

When they get removed from their homes because they were neglected or abused, most don't even have a change of clothes or a toy, Lisa Bain said.

"We want several backpacks in each police car so when they're at a time of transition, some of these kids don't even know what a safe place is, they can have a little bit of comfort," she said.

Each backpack with supplies costs $50 and they're looking for sponsors to cover the cost. If you’d like to donate, you can learn more here.
