On May 26, 2002, a barge struck the Interstate 40 bridge over the Arkansas River near Webbers Falls, leading to the deaths of 14 people.
A memorial to those victims was dedicated in Webbers Falls three years ago.

More than 500 feet of the four-lane structure collapsed into the river, causing cars and trucks to plunge into the water below.
Since the collapse, the state has erected 70 steel reinforced protection columns on bridges over the Arkansas River. Twenty three of those columns are on the I-40 bridge at Webbers Falls.
