Police believe alcohol played a part in a wrong-way crash which killed a Tulsa man on the Broken Arrow Expressway near Mingo early Wednesday.

They said the impact killed O.Z. Walker, 64, instantly. The wrong-way driver, identified as John Michael Freeman, 25, also of Tulsa was taken to the hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

Officers said an off-duty Tulsa Police detective was driving east on the Broken Arrow Expressway at Sheridan at about 12:30 a.m. and saw a Honda also going east in the westbound lanes.

The detective radioed for help and tried to flag down the wrong-way driver, but before patrol cars could get there, the wrong-way driver slammed head-on into a westbound Nissan between Memorial and Mingo.

The crash closed the westbound lanes of the expressway between Highway 169 and Memorial for almost four hours while police investigated the scene.

Police are awaiting results of a toxicology report on Freeman.
