Oklahoma Death Row Inmate Waives Right To Clemency Hearing

An Oklahoma death row inmate set to die in September has waived his right to seek clemency from the state Pardon and Parole Board.

Anthony Rozelle Banks is to be executed on Sept. 10 for the death of Sun "Kim" Travis in Tulsa County 34 years ago. The 61-year-old Banks was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death for the June 6, 1979, death of Travis.

The 24-year-old Korean national was abducted from a parking lot at her Tulsa apartment complex, raped and shot in the head.

Banks has a legal right to ask the Pardon and Parole Board to recommend that his death sentence be commuted to life in prison. Parole board acting director Tracy George said Friday that Banks has waived his clemency hearing.

Banks and a co-defendant were charged in August 1997 when the DNA of both men was detected in evidence found on the victim.

A Tulsa County jury convicted Nelson of first-degree murder in the case and sentenced him to life in prison.
