A popular south Tulsa casino is planning to expand. A $250 million construction project will transform the River Spirit Casino into Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Casino and Restaurant.
The casino's decor will be revamped to reflect Margaritaville's island theme and "escapism lifestyle," the casino announced Monday.
According to a news release, the plans call for a 500-room hotel featuring VIP suites, junior suites, parlor suites and standard rooms. There will be an outdoor and indoor swimming pool, fitness center, a world class spa and a pool deck overlooking the Arkansas River.
The project is on a two-year timetable.
The release says about 45,000 square feet of new gaming space will be branded as the Margaritaville Casino, to include up to 750 electronic gaming devices and 20 table games.
Officials say the project will generate approximately 800 new full-time jobs at the resort and it will have a combined annual economic impact of $135.4 million.
"I'm excited about our partnership with Margaritaville," said Creek Nation Principal Chief George Tiger. "This is a great future for both groups. Our history in Indian Gaming and the experience Margaritaville will offer those who visit will make this a premier destination resort."
A news conference is set for Tuesday afternoon, March 19, 2013 at the casino on Riverside Drive.
There are currently Margaritaville Casinos in Las Vegas and Biloxi, Mississippi, with planned locations in the works in Bossier City, Louisiana and Atlantic City, New Jersey.
