Thousands Sign Petitions For Oklahoma To Secede From U.S.

Thousands of Oklahomans are voicing their dissatisfaction with the outcome of the November 6 presidential election by signing petitions to allow the state to secede from the union.

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, however, issued this short but direct statement to News On 6 on Tuesday: "Oklahoma is not going to secede from the union."

The petitions are seeking permission for individual states to peacefully secede from the United States.

They are filed on We The People, a link through www.whitehouse.gov, the official website of the White House.

Citizens in more than 30 states have filed petitions, including Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma.

One of Oklahoma's two petitions says, "We petition the Obama Administration to peacefully grant the State of Oklahoma to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own new government."

The two petitions have at least 12,000 signatures.  

These petitions are not uncommon. Similar ones were filed following the 2004 and 2008 elections, but if a petition gets 25,000 signatures in a month, it will require an official response from the White House. 

Currently, Texas is the only state with enough signatures to qualify. As of Tuesday morning it had more than 61,000.
