A woman is dead after driving her truck at high speeds through barriers at a Tulsa Arkansas River park overlook, crashing onto the rocks below.
Just after 5 a.m., witnesses saw a black truck going westbound on 41st at speeds estimated near 100 mph. The vehicle crossed Riverside Drive, went through the parking lot and into the 41st Street Plaza park. The truck continued, smashing through a pavilion and overlook guardrail, plunging nose-first into the rocks below.
The 21-year-old driver was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
Witness Cheyenne McKinny had been sitting at a table near the truck's pathway. She said she was just walking away when she heard a loud "boom" as the truck tore through the park. She turned to see a cloud of white smoke and the truck going through the railing.
Tulsa firefighters and police worked the scene of the crash, crawling down the rocky bank to the wreckage below.
Damage to the park is expected to cost about $20,000, according to Tulsa Parks.
A spokeswoman says the area near the restrooms is now open but the stage, where the truck's bumper was found, will be closed until at least Monday.
It won't open until crews are able fully repair the railing.
Corporal Mark Secrist said they did not know the cause of accident or whether alcohol was involved.
