Famous Oklahomans Inducted Into State's Music Hall Of Fame

MUSKOGEE, Oklahoma -- Four Oklahomans were added to the Oklahoma's Music Hall Of Fame Thursday night in Muskogee.

One of the most recognizable is Sam Harris. The Sand Springs native landed in the spotlight when he won the first season of Star Search. Since then, he's performed all around the world and even found his way to TV.

Jean Shepard, from Pauls Valley, also joined the ranks. A pioneer in country music, she was the first woman in country music to sell a million records.  She'll celebrate her 55th year in the Grand Ole Opry soon.

"I have never forgotten where I come from," she said.

Jamie Oldaker was also inducted. The Tulsa native and drummer is a founding member of the Tractors and before that, he played with Bob Seger and Eric Clapton.  He has earned 24 gold and platinum records.

And the state's official balladeer is also going in to the hall of fame. Les Gilliam is a singer, songwriter and recording artist who has won several awards including the Governor's Arts Award from Governor Brad Henry.  He has recorded 14 albums featuring western swing and country music.

"This is the greatest honor I've received because it comes from my own home state," he said.
