PEEBLES, Ohio (AP) _ Nearly 20,000 customers lost power when high winds and rain swept through the Cincinnati area Sunday. Most outages were short-lived and by Monday morning the number without electricity was under 500, Duke Energy said.

A National Weather Service team planned to visit Adams County on Monday to see if a tornado was part of the storm system that plowed through the region.

Campers reported seeing strong winds rip down trees at the Mineral Springs Lake Resort in Peebles, about 70 miles east of Cincinnati.

Heavy thunderstorms accompanied by hail in some areas pounded Cincinnati's eastern suburbs and northern Kentucky, downing trees and power lines. Several people were trapped when an elevator shut down at the Carmel Manor retirement home in Fort Thomas, Ky., but they were freed within a half hour.

California Golf Course, a city-owned, public course in Cincinnati, was closed on Monday because of downed trees in fairways.
