(Broken Bow-AP) -- It will be a little cooler for people and fish alike in a community at the state's southeastern tip.

Officials in Broken Bow say a new hydroelectric plant may be up and running in a couple of years.

City Manager Mark Guthrie says the project is expected to generate four to five megawatts of electricity a month, which is about a third of the energy used by the town's 42-hundred residents.

The project is to be built below a re-regulation dam several miles downstream from the lake. A re-regulation dam dampens the downstream effect of water releases from a larger dam.

The power might be wired into the city's own electric company or sold to a five-state power grid based in Little Rock, Arkansas.

In addition to containing electricity costs for area businesses and residents, Guthrie says it will provide cool water for the 12-mile trout stream running from Broken Bow Lake to U-S Highway 70.
