(Normal, Illinois-AP) -- Illinois State University football coach Denver Johnson apparently is a candidate for the head coaching job at the University of Tulsa.

ISU Athletic Director Perk Weisenberger tells WJBC Radio in Bloomington that Tulsa has asked for permission to talk with Johnson.

Johnson is a 1981 graduate of Tulsa. He's in the third year of a four-year deal with ISU and has coached the Redbirds to an overall 15-and-18 record, including a 6-and-5 mark this season.

Tulsa officials aren't commenting, but say they want to fill the coaching vacancy before Christmas.

Tulsa coach Keith Burns resigned following the season after three years as head coach.
