ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) _ The University of Michigan imposed a postseason ban on its men's basketball program Thursday and forfeited all victories from four seasons because of a scandal involving a former booster.
Michigan also will remove banners from Crisler Arena that had celebrated its appearances in the NCAA's Final Four in 1992 and 1993 and for its 1997 National Invitational Tournament Championship and 1998 Big 10 Tournament Championship.
The school announced the penalties in a letter submitted to the NCAA. By imposing the sanctions on itself, Michigan hopes to forestall more severe action by the NCAA.
The postseason ban is for 2003, meaning the Wolverines won't be able to participate in the NCAA tournament or the NIT next spring. The team went 11-18 last season.
