Washington, D.C-AP) -- Two Oklahomans are on the list of
winners of the National Medal of the Arts and the National
Humanities Awards.

Maria Tallchief, a native of Fairfax, Oklahoma, will share the
stage with 18 other honorees of the National Endowments for the
Arts and Humanities for their contributions to the nation's
cultural heritage.

Tallchief was a long-time prima ballerina for the New York City
Ballet.

An Oklahoman winning a National Humanities Medal is television
anchor and editor Jim Lehrer. Lehrer hosts a weekday public
television news program named for him.

President Clinton and first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton will
present the medals at a South Lawn ceremony September 29th.

Other award winners this year include Aretha Franklin, Garrison
Keillor and Steven Spielberg.
