OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A state lawmaker says he'll introduce legislation requiring employers to allow parents to take time off, without pay, to attend school programs and conferences.

State Representative Mike Shelton of Oklahoma City says the proposal would bring the business community in line with President Bush's "No Child Left Behind Act."

Shelton's plan would prohibit businesses from penalizing parents who take off up to eight hours a year to attend their child's school functions.

The parents would be required to give employers reasonable notice of their planned absence because of a school function.
