JENKS, Okla. (AP) -- The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is mourning the loss of a retired state trooper who died from injuries he suffered in a 1999 shooting.
Former Trooper Steven Smith died Thursday at a rest home in Jenks. He was 43.
Smith was a hostage negotiator for the patrol on May 25th, 1999, when he responded to a murder scene in Grove where an armed suspect was holding police at bay. During a struggle with the suspect, Smith was shot in the neck.
The shooting left him permanently and totally disabled and forced him to take medical retirement in 2000.
Patrol officials say the injuries ultimately resulted in his death.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Bartlesville.
