OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma has completed its merger with Chicago-based Health Care Service Corporation.

Blue Cross is Oklahoma's oldest and largest private health insurance company. Health Care Service is the parent company of Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in Illinois, Texas and New Mexico.

Members of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma approved the merger in September and the state Insurance Department gave its approval in July. State insurance officials in Illinois and Texas gave their approval last week.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma will keep its name.

Both Health Care Service and Oklahoma Blue Cross are mutual insurance companies, meaning they're owned by members, not investors.
