Tulsa resident Carla Prothro went through six months of chemotherapy, then surgery at the OU Medical Center before walking out on her own power.

That was nearly two years ago, and she hasn't stopped walking since.

"I think it's very important as a cancer patient to have goals," Prothro said.

So, after overcoming stage 4 lung cancer, a 10K was Carla's new goal.

"And I thought what a better time than right now with the pandemic, we need to be out moving."

When the American Cancer's Society's Run for Hope went virtual, Carla got moving.

"When I hit that 6.2, I was so proud of myself. I want everyone to know that I walked 6.2 miles with half of a lung gone."

And Carla has only increased her lung capacity since. Now every morning, starting at 6 a.m., she walks that 6.2 miles.

Her oncologist said it helps her physically with her recovery, and it's also a time for reflection.

"Every day, I walk knowing that I did this, I'm beating my cancer with each step every morning when I get out."

Carla is currently cancer free and has volunteered with the American Cancer Society in both Oklahoma City and Tulsa over the last couple years.

As for her next goal, she's going to walk a half-marathon.
