An officer is on administrative leave and a man was released from police custody after the officer fired shots in southeast Oklahoma City, police said.

Police identified the officer as Sgt. Clint Music, an 11-year veteran of the department, and the man as 45-year-old Shallah Mitchell.

Police were called about 5 p.m. Sunday in reference to shots being fired in the 900 block of SE 15th Street.

When Music arrived, he encountered Mitchell who produced a weapon, police said.

Music discharged his weapon at Mitchell after Mitchell refused to follow Music's verbal commands, Oklahoma City police Capt. Dan Stewart said.

The shots missed Mitchell and he was not injured, Stewart said.

The weapon was determined to be a knife.

Mitchell was taken to Oklahoma City police headquarters where he was interviewed. Mitchell was released from police custody pending further investigation, Oklahoma City police Capt. Dan Stewart said.

Music was placed on administrative leave.
