Cherokee County Deputies said a delivery driver was dropping off donuts at a convenience store in Woodall when two people jumped in the car and took off.
“This was just a crime of opportunity. They saw an opportunity and they took it,” Sheriff Jason Chennault said.
A couple is in jail in Cherokee County after stealing a car full of donuts in Woodall.
It happened Tuesday morning just after 5 a.m. along Highway 62 in Woodall in Cherokee County.
Deputies said a Daylight Donuts delivery driver was stopping by to drop off donuts when a man and woman jumped in her car and took off.
“I’ve never experienced robbery or anything,” said Dana Orman.
Orman was working at Kwik-n-EZ Gas Station Tuesday morning when a couple came into the store. She said the couple sat down at a table in the back, but left when the donut delivery driver came in.
“She goes to the door and said who just left here and I said I didn’t see anyone, and she said they just left in my Jeep,” said Orman.
Orman said she called 911 and Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputies got there moments later. She said they then saw the car drive right in front of the store.
“I guess they saw the cops there so they stopped at that stop sign turned this way, stopped at that stop sign and came this way and the cop just jumped in the car and came up and got them,” said Orman.
Cherokee County Deputies were then able to catch up with car and took Jason McCool into custody about a mile west of the store in a trailer park on Highway 62.
They said his passenger Marissa Creech took off and was found by one of their K-9’s about 45 minutes later.
“We’ve had delivery vehicles stolen before. We had a bread truck stolen a couple years ago but this is the first donut delivery vehicle that we’ve had stolen,” said Cherokee County Sheriff Jason Chennault.
Chennault said this was more of a crime of opportunity.
“A lot of these delivery drivers when they make their deliveries, they leave their vehicles running. People take advantage of that and that’s what happened in this case,” said Chennault.
Owner of Daylight Donuts, Sarah Bryant, said she and her husband got a call from their delivery driver right around 5:30 p.m. saying the car had been recovered in Woodall. They said the call definitely came as a surprise.
“We were like what? In 31 years, that’s never happened to us,” said Sarah Bryant.
With several dozen donuts still in the car at the scene of the arrest, they decided it was the perfect spot to deliver them.
“We donated all our donuts that we would’ve delivered to our stores to all of the residents of the trailer park,” said Bryant.
“They fed all the donuts to the kids in the neighborhood so there was something good that came out of it,” said Sheriff Chennault.
Both McCool and Creech were arrested for larceny of a vehicle.
