Muskogee Public Schools announced that the district will move to virtual learning due to COVID-19 cases and the high number of absences.

The district said virtual learning will start on Monday, November 16 and be in effect for three weeks until in-person instruction resumes on December 7.

Muskogee Public Schools said in October, they had 31 students test positive for COVID-19 and in November so far they have had 32 positive cases among students. The district said 433 students have been or are in quarantine due to those cases.

The district also said that 45 staff members are currently out due to COVID-19 exposure, including six staff members who have tested positive for the virus.

"This is not an easy decision as an educator," Superintendent Dr. Jarod Mendenhall said in a letter. "In-person instruction is important to the development of our students. To make a swift return back to the classroom possible we need your help. I sincerely ask that our students, staff, families, and community play their part in stopping the spread."

The district said that they will continue to provide meals for students during the weeks of virtual learning.
