The nonprofit Safari Joe’s Exotic Wildlife Rescue is looking for help to keep its animals happy and healthy.
Elizabeth Cherry volunteers at the animal sanctuary located on the same grounds as Safari Joe’s H2O. She said it takes a lot of labor and a lot of love to keep things running smoothly.
"You know they have to be fed, they have to be watered. I mean they need supplies; they've just got to be cared for,” Cherry said.
A lot of the animals come from neglectful homes and were surrendered to the sanctuary to keep them safe. With colder weather on the way, many of the animals need to be moved inside.
“There is a lot of care involved with these animals,” Cherry said. “We’re always looking for volunteers."
The nonprofit also needs food donations to feed the various animals. Some food is more specialized, like donkey feed and primate biscuits, but simpler donations like fruits and vegetables are always needed.
Cherry said the birds could also use more enrichment toys like bells and balls.
M&M Lumber Co. recently donated wood for a new building for the mini donkey and Shetland pony. The loafing shed is in the process of being built, but when it’s done it’ll give the two animals more room to spread out.
Donations of enrichment toys and food can be dropped off at the front office of the Safari Joe’s waterpark.
You can find out more about volunteering your time by contacting the Safari Joe’s administrative offices at 918-749-7385.
