A Tulsa police officer has been indicted by a grand jury on federal gun charges.

U.S. Attorney Trent Shores, the FBI and Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin announced that Tulsa Police officer Latoya Dythe, along with Devon Jones who is not an officer, were indicted for conspiracy to lie to a firearms dealer.

According to documents, Dythe lied on a form when asked if they were buying a firearm for themselves. It said Dythe marked she was buying the gun for herself but was actually getting it for Jones.

Documents said Dythe gave Jones the gun when they got outside the Bass Pro Shops stores where they purchased it.

“Police officers are entrusted with enforcing the law to make our city safer. When a police officer breaks the law, however, it does great damage to the public’s trust. This prosecution involves in allegation that an officer, Latoya Dythe, engaged in criminal conduct by facilitating a “lie and buy” transaction as a straw purchaser,” said U.S. Attorney Trent Shores.

Dythe turned herself in and pleaded not guilty in federal court today. Jones is in The Tulsa County Jail.

Shores also emphasized that this indictment is against a single officer, not the Tulsa Police Department.
