Local Food Pantry Asks For Winter Items As Need Increases Amid Pandemic, Storms

A local food pantry is in need of help after the state’s recent winter storm.

Tulakes Food Center has continued to give back during the pandemic but is seeing an increase in need.

At the beginning of the pandemic, the food center served 35 families. Now, they are serving about 115 families each week.

They said they are seeing more people with more needs, including food or a warm place to sleep because of the cold temperatures and recent snowstorms.

While the facility does not offer an overnight option, Tulakes Food Center is asking the community for sleeping bags and clean heavy coats.

The group is also asking for canned vegetables, fruit, rice and cereal.

Sam O'Bannon has worked at the food pantry for a year and said he gives back because there is a mutual need.

"As a staff, there are days where our cups are a little empty. And our community fills us up. We are just doing our part to meet the needs of our community," said O'Bannon, the director of the Tulakes Food Center.
