Any regular year thousands would have gathered to honor Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. But as the pandemic change's lives the MLK coalition made changes as well by taking 40 years of traditions and making them virtual.
In years past, streets would be filled with people all heading to the History Center with the bell ringing and a parade to follow.
But the coalition created a virtual day of celebration. Many metro businesses were able to submit video clips of their tribute to MLK.
The newly elected Oklahoma County Sherriff Tommie Johnson served as the host.
In my own life, I would not be where I am today without these legends. I am a son of a butcher and a local banker," said Johnson.
This being the 41st year of Oklahoma City leaders to put on the event, William Jones, the event coordinator, said today is a day of not only celebration but unity.
"It's an opportunity for us to bring the community together. Our theme once was unity. And that's what it is all about. Bringing the community altogether because we are all just one foundation and one community of different races, ages, and communities," said Jones, MLK Coalition event coordinator.
