Southern Hills No Stranger To Hosting Best In Professional Golf

One of the most prestigious events in professional golf will be held in Tulsa. The PGA decided not to hold its championship at former president Trump's golf course in New Jersey following the storming of the U.S. capitol.

Now the 2022 PGA championship will take place at Southern Hills Country Club.

Southern Hills is no stranger to hosting the best of the best in professional golf. With seven major championships under its belt, it will now host one more.

General Manager Nick Sidorakis said having PGA of America staff already onsite and success of previous events, led to the decision to hold the 2022 championship at Southern Hills.

"Having the decision, some of the decision makers be here is key. We will get to unveil it twice in two years that doesn't happen very often unless you are on the PGA of rotation on the tour,” Sidorakis said.

The last time the course hosted the PGA championship in 2007, triple digit weather was a factor. Heat won't be an issue this time around, with the century-old major teeing off in May of 2022.

"We will just pray that we don't have any tornados, we will have a lot of people. The conditions line themselves to firm and fast, hopefully the greens can get as quick as we want. I think the only question comes in my head is rough, how much of rough can you grow and that’s a decision for the PGA to have to make,” Sidorakis said.

In 2019, Southern Hills spent $11 million renovating the championship course to its original 1936 layout which allows plenty of room for the golfers to play.

"We are truly relevant to today’s game when you look at it you can stretch it to 7,600-plus yards,” Sidorakis said.

State leaders said Southern Hills makes a lot of sense, and the tournament will provide an economic boost, putting eyes on Oklahoma.
