Maxine Horner, one of the first Black women to serve in Oklahoma’s state senate, passed away Sunday at the age of 88.
Horner was the cofounder of the Greenwood Cultural Center and was known as a strong advocate for survivors of the Tulsa Race Massacre.
Horner was elected to the Oklahoma state senate in 1986 along with Vicki Miles-LaGrange, making them the first Black women to serve in that role.
