Authorities said two women got into a physical confrontation inside the Uptown Lounge off South Peoria around 4:20 a.m. Saturday.

The women took their fight outside the club. When one of the club employees tried to break it up, the situation escalated.

"Once he got outside, shots were fired and the employee there was killed," Tulsa Police Department Lieutenant Brandon Watkins said.

Police said the man, whose name has not been released, was shot multiple times in the upper torso.

Watkins said the man should not have been shot just for doing his job.

"This is pointless," Watkins said. "There's no reason this man should have been killed."

Friends and co-workers of the man killed, who did not want to be on camera, said he was like family to every one of them.

He often offered them not just a place to work but was also a friend who brought them up at their darkest times.

"It's something that was totally preventable,” Watkins said. “Absolutely tragic and we are not going to rest until we catch a suspect.”

Police said its investigation is ongoing. A suspect has not been identified.
