Washington County Deputy Dies After Fight With Suspect

A Washington County Deputy has died in the line of duty after a fight with a suspect, officials said.

The sheriff's office said the deputy tried to restrain a suspect inside the jail on Thursday and the inmate fought back. Investigators said the deputy went to the hospital where he died.

Authorities said that a multiagency investigation led to the arrest of 17 people Thursday morning on drug-related charges. Officials said that one of the people arrested resisted and got into an altercation with the officers when they were taking him to the Washington County Detention Center.

Officials said he was a 10-year veteran of the Washington County Sheriff's office and had a wife and two small kids. Officials said he died of a chest injury.

Authorities said the OSBI will investigate the incident. Officials said the name of the deputy and suspect will not be released yet.
