One of the first words Avery Proffitt ever said, turned out to be prophetic.
"We knew that she had to have horses. I think it was maybe her second word," Avery’s Mom Tessa Proffitt said.
After asking for one every year, Avery's wish was granted when she turned nine.
"I was really happy, I started crying, and ran and gave my parents a big hug," Avery said.
Seven horses later, Avery is now taking the reins in training.
"She's always seeking more information every day," Tessa said. "There's something to learn about horses every single day.
"Training kind of has its ups and downs. It's not just a straight path like you think it should be," Avery said.
Avery has been experiencing all the highs and lows with her latest competition.
She's saddling up in the youth division of the Extreme Mustang Makeover, a national competition where trainers have 100 days to tame and train a practically untouched Mustang.
Avery's is named Indigo Moon.
"They test you every day, but I think she's getting better," Avery says.
Avery is about halfway through the 100 days with the competition coming up August 11th in Oklahoma City.
Extreme Mustang Makeover's mission is to encourage more people to adopt mustangs after seeing what youth trainers can accomplish in just over three months.
"I think my favorite part is just seeing the transformation she makes since I got her," Avery says. "Looking back at old pictures and videos and seeing how much better she's gotten."
Avery's unbridled enthusiasm doesn't show any signs of slowing down.
"I'd like to be an equine vet and train horses and just see what happens."
Whatever happens, the future is looking bright for this equine enthusiast.
