Oscar-winning actor Matt Damon is sharing a little about how he got into character before shooting a movie that was filmed in parts of Oklahoma.

The movie holds the name of an Oklahoma town. “Stillwater" is about a father from Stillwater, Oklahoma, who travels to France to help his estranged daughter get out of prison for a crime she says she didn't commit.

Matt Damon plays the character Bill Baker, an oil rig worker and dad.

Parts of the movie were shot in Stillwater, as well as a few other Oklahoma towns.

He said he wanted to establish a believable character, so before filming began, Damon went on a road trip through Oklahoma with director Tom McCarthy. That’s where he met a local oil rig worker named Kenny Baker, who helped Damon throughout the movie.

"He's one of the guys who took us around and he's just a great guy and we'd call him throughout the shoot to just get, you know, maybe tweak a little line of dialogue or ask him a question,” said Damon. “There's one moment where my co-lead, Camille, is an actress and she invites me to go the theater. Tom's like "theater" or "the-a-ter" and Kenny just goes, ‘The-A-ter, man.’ You know, so it's stuff like that. It's just very, very helpful to have an expert you know, in your corner."

Stillwater is set to hit theaters on July 30.
