Some Muskogee homeowners are going to get thousands of dollars from the city to repair and improve their homes.
The program has gone on for years and helped transform hundreds of homes. However, the program is ending soon.
“One of the things that small cities across America struggle with is recess neighborhoods and what this program has done is transformed the image of those recess neighborhood so, that when you drive through any quadrant at the city, it looks good,” Mayor Marlon Coleman said.
Coleman said for more than a decade, the city has had a neighborhood rehabilitation program.
The program gives some homeowners up to $20,000 to repair and transform their homes. The program is funded by the City of Muskogee Foundation, which selects the contractor who does the work on the home.
Coleman said so far, the city has helped hundreds of homeowners and given out more than $4,000,000 towards home repairs.
“This is the only city in this part of the state that have done something like this to this magnitude. We have given over $4 million to invest in residents to make sure they’re given the quality of like they deserve. So, I will always say the best place to live is Muskogee Oklahoma," Coleman said.
The City of Muskogee Foundation got the money for the program from the sale of the old Muskogee Regional Hospital. To be eligible, homeowners must fall within low-to-moderate income brackets and ensure that their property with clean and well-maintained.
Calvin Robinson is one homeowner who plans to apply.
"I feel good about it! Maybe I can get my home fixed up. If I get selected, I want to get new windows, doors, a new roof - all of it!” Robinson said.
The program is now on its last phase and will only give money to residents in a section area of Muskogee, from 31st to 25th streets, and from Military Boulevard to Border Avenue.
