One Oklahoma woman is celebrating her 100th birthday with a new do.
A Green Country hairstylist has come out of retirement to fulfill a promise she made to a client years ago. The fulfillment of that promise is just in time for that client's 100th birthday.
At Stephanie’s Hair Palace in Bixby, birthdays are a big deal. The hairstylists love to serenade their clients with a birthday song that’s so out of tune, you’ll never forget it! This particular birthday is a big one.
"What does it feel like to be turning 100 in a couple of days?” asked News On 6 Reporter Sawyer Buccy.
"Just like I felt when I was 98!" said Evelyn Felix, who will turn 100 years old on Monday.
She has been getting her hair done by Nancy Reynolds since the 1960s. Evelyn has a birthday party coming up, but Reynolds had a promise to fulfill before all the festivities began.
“Here at the beauty shop, there were some women in, saying she was 65 and hated it and some lady said, 'but you get a free fishing license!'” Reynolds recounted. “And so, Evelyn says, 'Well how old do you have to be to get a free hairdo!?' And I said, ‘Well, you have to be 100,'”
That was years ago, and Reynolds has retired since then, but she never forgot her promise.
"I was offered a lot more things when I got to be 100 but I haven't heard from any of the others," said Felix.
"You just can’t make promises and not keep them!” said Reynolds.
There was a homemade chocolate cake and candles, along with family and friends present.
“You don’t know how hard it is to keep tears away, but they are joy, tears of joy,” said Felix. “They are all loving people; I have tried to be a loving person. I have enjoyed my life and I will enjoy it to the end.”
