The Tulsa Humane Society is partnering with other local organizations and the Bissell Pet Foundation for the nationwide “Clear the Shelters” event this week.

The Tulsa Humane Society says overcrowding in shelters is a constant issue. This week it will be offering reduced fees on adoptions to encourage people to come get a furry friend.

The Tulsa Humane Society rescued 130 pets from Louisiana shelters in August ahead of Hurricane Ida and this week, it expects to rescue even more.

Jess Derr with the Humane Society said the shelter has been crowded between the Louisiana pets and the constant flow of Tulsa pets coming in.

“Almost every shelter is over capacity in Tulsa,” Derr said. “It’s unfortunate and it comes back to spaying and neutering your pets and ultimately it’s a big thing in Oklahoma.”

Derr said the shelter took dozens of those animals to Canada last week where there is high demand for adoptions, but said the shelter will soon be full again.

“It’s been incredible to be able to respond to disaster and save the pets there and get them into places that are adoptable,” Derr said. “Just come here, get our pets, and empty our shelters as well it’s really just a great feeling.”

The Tulsa Humane Society is open during regular hours this week and has several pets available for adoption.
