The suspect in a police standoff is in custody, according to the Tulsa Police Department.

Tulsa Police were engaged in a standoff situation near East 25th Street and Memorial Dr. for several hours on Wednesday after being called to a "mental health episode." Police say when they arrived 46-year-old Peter Demonte tried to use a sword or large knife to break into a neighboring apartment through a shared wall.

Officers used tear gas multiple times throughout the day and say after almost 7 hours Demonte surrendered peacefully and without incident.

"It causes no injury to him, no injury to the officers and it gets a very desired result which is exactly what we had today. It took a while but when we are talking about someone's life taking a while is usually the best thing because it could actually work," said TPD Captain Shane Tuell.

Police say that if Demonte was just having a "mental health episode" they would have tried to speak with him and offer assistance but once he attempted to break through the wall the situation escalated, requiring the Special Operations Team.

Officers say Demonte thanked them when he came out for not using deadly force. He is facing potential charges of first-degree burglary, assault with a dangerous or deadly weapon, and threatening a violent act.

This is a developing story...
