Morris Public Schools is holding a fundraiser on Monday to help train the district's new therapy dogs.

School administrators in Morris are asking the public for donations to complete the dogs' training since administrators said they have already noticed the dogs helping students both personally and academically.

Kalani and Shadow are Morris Public Schools’ new Goldendoodle therapy dogs.

"We explained that this was our brand-new student. Kalani would come to school every day the same way they (the students) have to get up and they take care of their responsibilities. Kalani comes to school every day the same way," said Kelli Baker, the school counselor.

Shadow works with the middle and high school students while Kalani spends her days primarily at the elementary school.

Principal Becky Alexander said Kalani supports her students and also motivates them to learn.

"One of the things that we see is our students, they get Kalani time, and to motivate our students to be readers, they read to her, and she just comes and sits in their lap,” said Alexander. “And we see student engagement just by her laying there, and they feel like they are getting to read to someone."

High school students said seeing Shadow is a highlight of their day and helps with the anxiety and pressures they’re facing.

"I actually just had a conversation with somebody and they said, quote by quote, 'Shadow is what helps me get up in the morning and go to school'," said Hannah Stiltner, a senior.

Hannah believes the dogs represent much more to the school than just a lovable presence.

"They just bring hope to students who may not have it,” Stiltner said.

There is a fundraiser at the McDonalds in Okmulgee Monday evening at 5 p.m. The money raised will help fund the rest of Shadow’s training. Kalani’s training has already been paid.

For those who are unable to attend Monday’s fundraiser, but would still like to donate to the dogs, you can send donations to the address below:
