Minority students who want to learn more about the medical profession will get the chance to do so on Tuesday during a summit at Union Public Schools.

The Oklahoma Chapter of Black Men in White Coats is putting on the summit with the goal of connecting minority students with medical leaders who look like them.

Organizers say they want to address the lack of representation when it comes to Black men working in medicine and encourage students to pursue a career in the field.

Students will hear from local medical professionals, learn medical skills and also have the opportunity to connect with potential mentors.

According to the Black Men in White Coats national organization, Black men make up only 5% of national physicians, and Black women make up 3%.

The group started in 2013 with the goal of increasing those numbers.

The summit is for 8th through 12th-grade minority students and will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Grand Hall at Union High School.
