There could be big changes coming to the Promenade Mall as the Tulsa Oilers seek to turn the old Macy's store into the team’s new practice facility. The team owner wants to turn the empty space into two ice rinks, office space, and a place for the public to enjoy everything ice sports have to offer.

Team owner Andy Scurto said he plans to turn the area around 41st and Yale into an exciting place for the community once again. The old Macy’s store has sat empty for the past five years, but Scurto tells us this space is ideal for the Oilers because it has enough parking and space to support the team’s needs. Scurto said there are about 1,000 parking spaces available and the area can accommodate any extra traffic when needed.

In order for the project to move forward, they will need to extend the capacity limits to 250 people, knock down the columns that currently hold the roof up since they are in the way, and make sure the building can handle the requirements for laying down ice and keeping it cool.

Currently, the team practices at the BOK Center and rents time at the Oilers Ice Center in Broken Arrow.

This $15 million project would bring two ice rinks, offices, snack shop, sports bar, arcade, pro shop, and a restaurant open for public use along with being the official practice space for the Oilers.

“We will clean the place up and I’m really excited about doing it, we’ll be doing a lot of fun things out there, and once we are up and running we want to see a lot of people out there skating, learning hockey, and enjoying the game,” Scurto said.

Right now the team is working on getting the project proposal through the zoning board. Scurto said he hopes to have an official answer by the end of April, but when and if the board gives the all-clear, he said he hopes to have the new ice center open by fall 2023.
