Former Navy Sailor Buys A Cup Of Joe For Veterans

It’s not Veteran’s Day or Memorial Day, or any other day scheduled to honor veterans, but Tuesday for Tom George is a good day to honor veterans  

“To me, buying a cup of coffee is the smallest thing that we can do,” said Tom George, who bought coffee for veterans.  

After serving 25 years in the Navy, serving is normal for Tom. He sent out a social media post inviting veterans to come and have a cup of coffee with him.  

“Some do it in public service and politics, and some do it in coaching and you know I’m always compelled to give and to serve,” said George.  

He wanted to serve those who served.  

“To just buy coffee for military active and retired, and to be honest with you anybody that has served,” said George.  

But after rethinking his service plan, he expanded it.  

“Fire department, policemen, nurses, doctors, first responders, anybody that has served,” said George.  

His only motive?  

“I don’t over think anything, I thought that maybe a cup of coffee would be a way for me to shake somebody’s hand and look them in the eye and tell them thank you,” said George.  

“I couldn’t be more appreciative of him, my friend, the men and women sitting here in this coffee shop that I have the honor and privilege to spend time with,” said Hoang Lamb, who received free coffee.  

George hopes that starting someone’s day off with an act of kindness will set a tone for the day.  

“They can do something kind for someone else and as the day goes on that energy just kind of carries itself,” said George.  

“It’s the small things in giving, that are going to impact lives the longest,” said George.  

He believes as a country, we are missing the mark in just being kind to each other.  

“The whole act of kindness thing I think is a little overstated, because there shouldn’t be an act of kindness. To me, this should be normalcy in our country and it’s not,” said George.  

George doesn’t consider himself a hero, he believes everyone should take time to appreciate others.
