An unfortunate incident took place at Edmond North and Santa Fe High Schools Wednesday. That’s what district staff told parents after someone interrupted a video call.
It’s what happened a few seconds after an unknown party joined the call and performed a sexual act on camera -- that has parents and faculty concerned.
“They’re taking advantage of something that might be misconfigured,” Jonathan Kimmitt, chief information security officer at Alias Cybersecurity in Yukon, said.
Parents of students at the two high schools received an apology from the school staff.
Edmond School District staff said in a statement, “An individual was mistakenly admitted to the video call.”
“A lot of times they’ll come in because they’ll find the meeting invite in someone’s email,” Kimmitt said.
People can learn from moments like this.
“Don’t reuse meeting invites,” Kimmitt said.
A lot of these online meeting rooms have waiting rooms. The moderator of that meeting can decide who is supposed to be there and who is not.
“Making sure only registered users of the tools can be very, very helpful,” Kimmitt said.
Keep an eye on all online accounts to catch anything that doesn’t look right.
“If we did that better as an industry, as the community, I think we’d see a lot less problems like this,” Kimmitt said.
A few solutions everyone can learn from technology’s problems.
The Edmond School District said the incident is under thorough investigation by the district, Edmond Police, and the third party who participated in the event.
The district said at this point in the investigation shows the district’s network was not compromised to gain access to the presenter’s link.
