TBD Creatives started making candles to spread light, and they are spreading light in more ways than one.

“My wife, probably a little over a year ago, just mentioned she wanted to know how to make candles, and she spent a lot of money on candles at the time,” Jon Mayes, who started TBD Creatives with his wife Mandi, said.

About eight months ago the couple started making candles and giving to friends and family for free.

“We’re getting a lot of feedback from friends and their friends and probably gave a few hundred candles away and got better at it,” Mayes said.

They realized pretty quickly some not-so-good things about a lot of the candles being sold.

“The candles that we were burning and that most people burn are loaded with petroleum and chemicals that are just not safe to breathe and can actually be really harmful for you and your kids,” Mayes said.

The candles created by TBD are made with soy wax and clean ingredients, but also serve a greater purpose.

“One of the easiest ways to do that is to start a candle company that gave money back to nonprofits that are helping people get second, third, and fourth chances in Oklahoma City,” Mayes said.

Ten dollars from every candle sold goes to nonprofits like City Care, Palomar, and others.

“We will pass four thousand dollars in giving back to the nonprofits in Oklahoma City at the end of this month,” Mayes said.

There are 23 scents for the candles and demand is so great they had to move the business out of their home.

“We ran across this place. A friend of ours actually had a baby boutique that was already here, and she was like, I just want to spend more time with my kids. I don’t need this space anymore,” Mayes said.

Jon and Mandi purchased the space at 105 S.E. 1st Street in Moore along with all the merchandise, with fifteen percent of the sales going to the nonprofits.

Along with the store is a comfortable space for guests to relax, read a book, or just drink coffee. It can also be reserved as a meeting space.

“As we grow, we will actually be able to start hiring people that come out of experiencing homelessness, or domestic abuse, or prison,” Mayes said.

The candles and lotions are also available as fund raisers and can be shipped anywhere in the country.
