Oklahoma man, Reece Gibbins, has graduated from the Fire Academy last week, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Gibbins’ dad is also a firefighter, so Gibbins is carrying on his fathers’ legacy.
If a person asked Reece Gibbins, what it takes to serve on a team, he would say; you have to earn your place.
“It’s very organized and very fast-paced,” said Gibbins, who just graduated from the Fire Academy last week.
Reece Gibbins worked hard to wear his Oklahoma City Firefighter uniform.
“We want quality people that are willing to work hard – serve the community,” said Corporal Chris McCormick with the Oklahoma City Fire Department.
Gibbins' new job requires constant preparation for the next call.
“When you get a call it’s all business,” Gibbins said.
Reece knows all about preparation because he’s been waiting for this moment his whole life.
Reece’s dad also works for the OKC Fire Department. The department shared a photo of Reece visiting his dad’s fire station as a kid. Last Friday, he fulfilled his childhood dream and kept his family legacy burning.
“It makes you really want to think about your community in a different way,” Gibbins said. “Try to be positive about every call you make and give the best care you can to each patient.”
Eventually dreams become one's responsibility.
“It takes somebody that willing [do] to that and face some sacrifices,” McCormick said.
“A lot of focus and he was intentional about in his life and the steps he’s taken to get to this place,” McCormick said.
Once someone earns their place on this team, they become part of this family and a new generation of firefighters who are prepared for the next call for help.
“You’re very excited to go to work the next morning. It’s easy to get up,” Gibbins said. “Super thankful for this opportunity.”
