The March of Dimes organization is working to improve maternal and infant health care throughout the country.
Members and advocates are meeting with state lawmakers to discuss how to help moms across the state in the annual March for change event.
March of Dimes director of maternal and infant health, Laurie Apple Kamp, said data from the CDC and other research conducted through the organization suggests premature birth rates are high in Oklahoma because the state is lacking access to adequate health care.
Research from the CDC and the organization shows in Oklahoma over 50% of births are on Medicaid.
“We want to make sure Medicaid is providing all the things needed for moms , like additional coverage for breast pumps”, said Applekamp.
Applekamp said legislation passed Senate Bill 837 is designated as pregnancy, infant and childhood loss awareness for the month of October.
